18th Amendment case hearing challenged in SC

ISLAMABAD: The hearing of petitions against the 18th Amendment was challenged in the Supreme Court on Thursday.

During the hearing today, Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry asked Advocate Mohammad Akram Shaikh, the counsel for petitioner Nadeem Ahmed, to explain Article 6 of the amendment.
Sheikh told the apex court that the Judicial Commission was in conflict with Articles 2-A and 68 of the Constitution and the new procedure for the appointment of superior court judges would destroy the institution of judiciary.

Sheikh said that the parliamentary form of government was successful only in countries with two party setups and in Pakistan there were 14 political parties operating at the moment.

He showed his reservation on the law minister’s inclusion in the Judicial Commission and said this would end the concept of separation of authority between the judiciary and the executive.—DawnNews
